books i love: the landscape of man

i love diagrams, aerial landscape, pattern and maps and the landscape of man by geoffrey and susan sullivan is chock full of all of these things. the text traces how humans have shaped the landscape and environment-decoratively, functionally, agriculturally, tragically-from prehistory to the present. the book is extremely well illustrated as the authors make visual connections between decorative art, painting, garden design and architecture in order to contextualize the culture of a particular time period and the effect it had on the landscape. i can't tell you how often i pick up this book just to look at it and every time i do i see something new.
